Experience

My years of working with young, struggling learners has sharpened my focus on the key areas of learning necessary for success: 1. Letters and sounds. Recognizing letters and knowing the sounds they make is called phonics. Learning the various sounds for consonants and vowels is the foundation for learning how to read. 2. Sight words. There are a few hundred words that are most frequently used in all language and reading. When these words are read "automatically" reading becomes easier. 3. Fluency. Practicing reading aloud helps with confidence. Fluent reading is the ability to read with ease, not speed. As fluency increases, so does comprehension. 4. Vocabulary. There are strategies for students to use to help understand and remember new, important words. 5. Comprehension. Reading is about understanding. Reading with good comprehension key to successful learning. These are the key areas I focus on with young readers. But to learn effectively, children have to want to learn. Learning has to be fun!

Hobbies

I love to teach children because I understand that learning happens when children feel happy, safe and confident. I play learning games rather than drilling. I choose books carefully matched to the child's personality. I use humor and lots of patience to encourge learning and curiosity. My goal is to show students that reading is fun, worthwhile and a gift for life. My husband and I have lived in Marlborough for about 3o years. We have 3 grown children and we like to ski, hike, bike and travel. We especially enjoy throwing sticks in the river for our dog, Tucker.
